Workshop

Understanding Coal Combustion and Boiler Damage Modes in Flexible Coal-Fired Operations

Marc Lemmons & Stephen Storm, EPRI

As coal-fired power plants adapt to increasingly dynamic grid demands and variable fuel qualities, the challenges associated with combustion and boiler reliability have become more complex and critical. This 3-hour technical workshop, hosted by EPRI for the Coal Users Group, is designed to equip plant engineers, operators, and technical staff with foundational and applied knowledge to better manage combustion processes and mitigate boiler damage in flexible operating environments.

The workshop begins with an Introduction to Combustion and Flexible Operation, highlighting the evolving landscape of coal combustion, the implications of fuel variability, and the operational challenges posed by cycling and low-load conditions. Participants will gain insights into how these factors influence flame stability, heat transfer, unit performance, boiler failure/damage modes and emissions.

Next, the session on Boiler Damage Modes provides a comprehensive overview of the most prevalent damage modes observed in coal-fired boilers, including corrosion, erosion, thermal fatigue, and creep. Drawing from both domestic and international plant experiences, this segment emphasizes the root causes and detection strategies for these mechanisms.

The third segment, Correlating Combustion and Boiler Damage, will help bridge the gap between the relationship with combustion dynamics and material degradation. Attendees will explore how poor combustion control, slagging, fouling, and temperature excursions contribute to accelerated wear and failure of boiler components.

Case Studies

To reinforce these concepts, EPRI will present Case Studies that illustrate real-world examples of boiler damage linked to combustion and operational flexibility. These studies will highlight lessons learned and best practices for prevention and mitigation.

Roundtable Discussion

The workshop concludes with a Roundtable Discussion, offering participants an opportunity to share experiences, ask questions, and engage in collaborative problem-solving with EPRI experts and industry peers.

Why Attend? This training is essential for those seeking to enhance plant reliability, reduce maintenance costs, and optimize performance in today’s challenging operational landscape.
